Stress Management
Stress, Overwhelm
In the whirlwind of modern life, stress has become a ubiquitous companion. It seeps into our daily routines, our relationships, work/school life, and our overall well-being, leaving us feeling overwhelmed, exhausted, and disconnected from ourselves. While stress is a natural response to challenges and demands, it’s important to recognise when it starts to take a toll on our mental and emotional health, as that generally seeps into our physical health in time.
Stress manifests in various forms, each with its unique impact on our lives. Acute stress, a short-term response to immediate threats, serves as a protective mechanism. However, when stress becomes chronic, it can morph into a debilitating force, disrupting our physical, emotional, and psychological well-being.
Chronic stress can manifest in various ways, including:
-
Emotional distress: Manifesting as anxiety, irritability, mood swings, and difficulty concentrating.
-
Physical symptoms: Headaches, muscle tension, digestive issues, sleep disturbances, and fatigue.
-
Social and relationship strains: Conflicts with others, withdrawal from social activities, and feelings of isolation.
-
Changes in behavior: Increased substance use, unhealthy coping mechanisms, and avoidance of activities that once brought joy.

BODY/MIND CONNECTION
A recent Examiner article stated that 91% of employees are sick with worry citing the psychosomatic connection between stress and physical illness. It is a well known fact in the hypnotherapy field that 80% of symptoms are psychosomatically caused by the subconscious mind and it is a watershed to find that current research is confirming this fact.
The body is often the first indicator that stress has reached the level of distress. It responds quickly to real or perceived threats. In the classic situation, if our senses tell us that our lives are in jeopardy, the body gears up for immediate battle or speed. All internal systems respond: the heart speeds up, the breath becomes more rapid, muscles tense, eyes dilate, the gastrointestinal system disrupts digestive processes, nerves and hormones respond. By this “fight or flight” stress response, we instinctively gird for action.
Extensive research in several fields of medicine and psychology, including brain chemistry, neurobiology, immunology, and psychoendocrinology, provide evidence to the body/mind connection.
